WEST STREET HONORED FOR WORK WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT
Production Company Wins One of Video's Top Awards
West Street Productions has won the Telly Award for the production of a recruitment video for the Montgomery County Police, in Montgomery County, Maryland. “The First of the First Responders” tells the dramatic story of the county’s 911 Emergency Call Center.
“The job of a 911 call taker and dispatcher is intense. People’s lives are at stake with every call,” said Dan Cohen Executive Producer - Director for West Street. “Our mission was to show what this job is all about. It’s a tough job, but a very rewarding job.”
Like many law enforcement agencies, the Montgomery County Police Department faces challenges finding the best candidates to fill 911 positions. The County turned to West Street to create a recruitment video as part of their outreach strategy.
“You never know who is on the other end of a 911 call, or what kind of trouble they may be in.,” Cohen said. “We designed a video that captures that intense excitement of this job.”
“This is the second video West Street has produced for our department,” said Officer Brian Walker of the Department’s recruitment section. “The first was a recruitment video for police officers. It was a great success, and now the 911 video has become a showcase for our recruitment effort.”
The video was created to give Montgomery County a number of ways to use it and leverage its investment. It is appropriate for presentations, the web site, and recruitment fairs. It has also been turned into a commercial that is running in TV markets in the Northeast.

“It’s especially gratifying to be honored for work with our nation’s law enforcement agencies,” Cohen said, “The 911 dispatcher really is “The First of the First Responders.”
WEST STREET MAKES IT A DOUBLE
(Washington, DC) West Street Productions’ work is being honored with two new awards for video production. The video, “A Fire Safety Campaign for Babies and Toddlers’ has won both the “Communicator Award” for video production, and the “MerComm Mercury Award.” The video was produced by West Street Productions for Hager Sharp Inc., a Washington, DC-based communications firm, and the U.S. Fire Administration.
“This production was very gratifying, because the campaign is about children and saving lives,” said Dan Cohen of West Street Productions.
The target audience for the video is parents of infants and toddlers. In a home fire, infants and small children are twice as likely to die as the rest of us because they are helpless to escape the fire. The video graphically demonstrates how parents can protect their children. It presents two families who survived a fire in their home to illustrate that the dangers from fire are real.
“People might say ‘I never thought it could happen to me,’ but when you see and hear these families, it’s easy to understand that fire can happen anywhere and at anytime,” Cohen said.
Information parents need to know about children and fire is then wrapped around the real stories. “We felt that families’ stories give a sense of urgency to the information, and will have more impact,” Cohen said. “We are excited to have had the opportunity to be a part of such an important project.”
